Five Things: More Than 'Lipstick on a Pig'

Gov. Malloy's Cuts, Computer Glitch, New Zoning Position

  1. Cloudy skies early today will become partly cloudy later in the day. High 42F. Winds E at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight periods of rain. Low 37F
  2. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced $78.6 million in budget cuts this week. The areas hit hardest are among of the usual suspects -- the Department of Children and Families ($28.4 million), the Department of Mental Health and Addiction ($14.5 million) and the Department of Education ($3.2 million). Cultural institutions across the state, including the Mystic Aquarium, also would be affected.
  3. The town council on Wednesday approved transfers of funds for the purpose of hiring a full-time zoning/wetlands enforcement officer. Since last year, Building Official Randy Dalton has been wearing both hats, but Zoning Commission Chairman Eric Treaster said Dalton has been “swamped.”
  4. Town Hall was effectively without Internet service for four days this week, beginning on Friday and continuing until Monday, Mayor John Rodolico told council members Wednesday. He said town hall computers were moving so slowly that work really could not be done. The problem persisted until "a woman named Jennifer" at Comcast was able to correct the problem in about five minutes, Rodolico said.
  5. Town Councilor said she and Mayoral Assistant Mark Bancroft recently met with representatives from . She said the company is “very cognizant of complaints by citizens,” and actually has “big plans” to improve the shopping center in Gales Ferry. Davis said she had been hoping for some new lights and maybe some fresh paint. “Silly me,” said Davis, who went into the meeting thinking “lipstick on a pig,” but was pleasantly surprised by the scope of proposed improvements now awaiting final approval.
