Get Out: Five Great Things To Do This Weekend

Because It's No Fun To Stay Home All Weekend

With August nearly upon us, it’s time to take on this final July weekend in style. Save the back-to-school shopping until next month, because we have the perfect summer weekend all planned out. And we’re not kidding—there’s some seriously cool local stuff going down. Now hurry along and slip your finest flops and shades, because there’s no time to waste!

1. 

WHERE/WHEN: Thursday through Sunday at 7 p.m. this weekend and the following weekend at the Connecticut College Arboretum in New London.

WHY GO: It’s Shakespeare. It’s outside. It’s free.

PRICING: Admission is free but donations will be accepted.

2. OLD LYME’S MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL

WHERE/WHEN: Friday evening and throughout the day on Saturday. Events will be held on Lyme Street at The Florence Griswold Museum, the Lyme Art Association and the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.

WHY GO: Friday night is all about art and music. On Saturday, don’t miss the artisan fair, open-air market, chef competition, music, family-friendly activities and tons of exhibits.

PRICING: Many events, including Friday’s concert, are free. Fees vary for other activities. Free shuttle bus is available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

3. 

WHERE/WHEN: Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine at the Mystic Valley Hunt Club in Gales Ferry.

WHY GO: Shelter dogs and puppies are looking for homes, and you can help! And they’re just so darn cute.

PRICING: The event is free, the dogs are not, but still worth every penny.

4. 

WHERE/WHEN: Noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Goshen Fairgrounds.

WHY GO: Wine, specialty food, live music, more wine and a whole lot of fun.

PRICING: Daily admission tickets are $25 at the door.

5.  

WHERE/WHEN: Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Mystic Seaport.

WHY GO: The grounds are open to visitors free of charge. Schaefer’s Spouter Tavern will be open for dinner and Bob Lavalley will perform live starting at 5:30 p.m.
