Governor Orders Flags to Half-Staff for Sandy Hook Anniversary

Bells in Connecticut's houses of worship will ring 26 times in memory of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced today the state of Connecticut would lower its flags to half-staff in memory of the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Flags will fly at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, Dec. 14 — the one-year anniversary of the tragedy.

Earlier in the week, Malloy asked houses of worship and other organizations to ring their bells 26 times at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning in honor of the 26 victims of the shooting.

"The message of these two actions is simple: a moment to come together and mourn, followed by acts of kindness to one another," Malloy said in a statement. "We can never fully understand and will hopefully never experience the pain that those most affected by this tragedy feel. But what we can do is always keep them in our prayers — and we can act."
