Bag of Potatoes Has a Heart

Gales Ferry Kindergartner Finds Rare Double Potato

Gales Ferry School kindergartener Arianna Laverne Mason, daughter of United Way CEO Virginia L. Mason, showed off her "twin potato" at the United Methodist Day Care Center last week. She was preparing to take the potato to school for show and tell.

Laura Giannelli was at the day care center when Arianna arrived with her special potato and sent us the story and these photos.

The heart-shaped tuber was purchased at Ledyard’s in a bag of potatoes. Arianna’s uncle sent her an email telling her to learn more about "tatercardia," and to play a game of "Heart potato! Heart potato!” He challenged the family to a "spud and tater" pun contest.

A double potato is a rarity. This one showed up a little late for Heart Health Month (February), but the belated Valentine still managed to raise some spirits in these final days of winter.
