Daily Five: Grab A Drink With An Old School Friend

Five things to know for Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012

1. Stonington artist, Haley Lynn Smith, will be exhibiting selected work from her series on social media until Jan. 1, at the Madison Art Cinemas at 761 Boston Post Rd., in Madison.

“My art seeks to reveal man’s compulsive tendencies through an exploration of our often volatile relationship to technological advances, specifically social media," Smith said. "My goal is to produce an environment, which urges the viewer to question the nature of connectivity. My hope is that after viewing my sculptures one will leave with a new perspective on Our New Relationship.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public.

2. Newtown began saying goodbye Monday to the victims of the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a long and sad process of obituaries, wakes and funerals expected to last throughout the week.

As we read these final farewells, we are moved to help in some way. Here is a list of the charitable contributions identified by some of the victims' families.

3. If you could pick a local business in Mystic, Stonington or Pawcatuck that you think more people should know about, what would you pick?

4. This is the time when we pull out our sweaters, thermals and heavy coats, lose half of our day to early dusk, and start to crave large quantities of comfort food. The time of year for family expectations and holiday cheer when that old friend who moved to L.A. is home and wants to meet up for a drink. So, where will you take them? Here are 10 places to grab a drink with an old friend.

5. Today's thought: "There aren’t enough days in the weekend.”—Rod Schmidt
