Sometime between 1887 and 1891, the church inaugurated the custom of taking flowers to the Gales Ferry Cemetery on "Decoration Day Sunday" and placing them on the veterans’ graves there. Our original church building was located on Hurlbutt Road. Even though our present church was built farther away, it’s still close enough to continue our Memorial Day tradition of beginning the service in the sanctuary, then walking down to the parklet at the four corners. A more recent tradition is a short meaningful service held at the parklet with an address by a military member of our congregation, a choir rendition, and a prayer. Taps is heard echoing across the cemetery at the conclusion of the service. Our Sunday School children place geraniums on the graves while the address is given. Please join us as we remember those who served our country faithfully. Parents are asked to supervise children on the walk down and back.
