Free Fence and Locks to Secure Borders at Ledyard Animal Shelter

A few weeks ago Kimlyn Marshall, Ledyard’s Animal Control Officer, lived through a worst case scenario when two dogs housed in the shelter plotted a great escape and almost got away with it.

The dogs were in a main room, and after watching Kimlyn open and close the door frequently, the two smart alecs popped the lever-style door knob and made a run for it. Where they wanted to go, we’ll never know because luckily, Kimlyn caught up with them.

While the dogs may have been taking a cue from Roy Rogers’ “Don’t Fence Me In,” the community of Ledyard had another idea. Within moments of Kimlyn posting to her friends on Facebook about the mini heart attack she had, volunteers reached out to help.

AA Lock and Key came down that day and installed a protective barrier over the door knobs so that no more of the shelter's cleverest residents can let themselves out. On top of that, Sprigs and Twigs called Kimlyn and said they’d donate a fence so that if animals manage to emancipate themselves from the building, their jaunt will be restricted to the front yard.

"We are big animal lovers and do whatever we can to help them and keep them safe," said Bill Lillie of Sprigs and Twigs, who often dispatches his bucket truck to retrieve local cats from trees. "There are a lot of people in this community and others that unselfishly devote themselves to animals, I felt it was the least we could do."

Luther Fencing of Groton has agreed to install the donated fence.

Stay tuned for updates on the new fence and check out Kimlyn’s blog on the Ledyard Patch and the Ledyard Animal Control’s Facebook page.
