Mystic Will Be Home to Grace McDonnell's Playground

The groundbreaking for the playground named in honor of Grace, one of the 20 children killed at Sandy Hook School, will take place on April 24.

The ribbon cutting for Grace McDonnell's Mystic Playground at the YMCA is less than two weeks away.

Groundbreaking on the playground, named in honor of Grace, one of the 20 first graders killed at Sandy Hook School on Dec. 14, 2012, will take place on April 24. The ribbon cutting is scheduled to take place three days later, on April 27.

Grace was 7 years old when she was killed, and like the other children, her short-lived life was full of hope, happiness and love — and the unfettered, innocent joys of childhood. The playground in her honor is one 26 being built throughout the tri-state area through The Sandy Ground Project: Where Angels Play.

Earlier this month, a playground in honor of Ana Grace Marquez-Greene opened at Elizabeth Park in Hartford — on what would have been her 8th birthday.

Grace's playground will be located at Williams Beach Park, 1 Harry Austin Drive in Mystic.
