The lobby of the Capitol building in Hartford on Wednesday was full of fresh fruit, organic lettuce, smoothies, chowder, oysters on the half shell and lots and lots of farmers, as the Department of Agriculture's annual Ag Day celebrated all things homegrown in the state.

Dannel Malloy, who worked his way through the gauntlet of booths before taking to the podium, gave a short speech and then presented the 2012 Young Farmer of the Year award to Russell Holmberg of .
Malloy spoke about everything he learned in his quick trip through the displays, including that it was a short and difficult season for maple syrup producers but that the overly warm winter meant Connecticut oysters are particularly succulent right now.
