Seal in Poquetanuck Cove Was Adult Harp Seal

The seal spotted on an ice floe in Poquetanuck Cove Saturday was a healthy adult harp seal whose appearance so far up river is unusual, but not unprecedented, said Erin Merz, manager of media and public relations at the Mystic Marinelife Aquarium.

"It was an odd area for a sighting, but they follow the food," said Merz, who said there have been reports of seal sightings as far inland as Hartford.

"We went out there (Monday) and the ice was gone and the seal was gone," she said.
