VIDEO: Ledyard Police K9 Unit Visits Aquarium Trainers

The Ledyard K9 unit and aquarium trainers exchange notes on how to work with furry or flippered friends.

The K9 unit of the Ledyard police paid a visit to the Mystic Aquarium, not for work but to see how trainers at the aquarium train and handle the water-bound animals in captivity.
, said he recognized many of their training methods such as rewarding the animals with food and repetition. But, he said he was amazed the trainers could get the wild animals to behave.

The police officers met trainers who work with beluga whales, penguins, fish and sea lions.

Gagnon said it took approximately 8-weeks to train his K9 partner, Ringo.

Gagnon and Ringo will be at the Cabin-Fever Festival and Chowder Cook Off at the Olde Mystic Village today from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. to demonstrate and answer questions about the K9 police dog's special skills and talents.
