The week's top stories on the Ledyard Patch.

This week the Ledyard Patch brought you a report from a meeting held at Ledyard Center School about the school’s future. Parents attended the event with the hopes of hearing Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Graner explain where the Board of Education stands on closing the school. Parents were able to share what concerns they have and there were many. This article explains some of the issues they brought up.

Absentee ballots became available this week for the May 21 referendum and on that note, the police department hosted an open house this week and will hold another this afternoon. The open house is intended to let residents into the current building so that they can make an informed choice on the ballot measure to approve $6.7 building project for a new facility for the police force. In total, five people attended Thursday’s open house, two of which were reporters.

A pair of teenagers were charged in connection with the brush fire that broke out and burned through a pretty big swath of land at the end of Captain Amos Stanton Drive last Sunday. Here are some pictures of the charred ground and here are details of the police charges.

Ellen Mahoney began the softball program at Ledyard High School decades ago and on Saturday afternoon, school officials - past and present - were happy to announce that the softball fields behind the school will bear her name. She had some great advice for current and past softball players.

Jim Grzesiak, a former Ledyard police officer, spoke to The Day paper Monday after learning that he has been fired from the police department after 19 years of employment.

He told reporters that he will fight for his job back. Grzesiak has a history of disciplinary issues prior to his most recent arrests in October and January, according to the article, which goes on to explain some the Grzesiak’s proceedings that have taken place recently.
