When There are Flowers There is Ice Cream

Much to the delight of eager customers on sunny and reasonably warm spring day, the new crew at Cows and Cones pulled off a season opener Thursday. It was a charmed day, considering that less than one month ago I drove down to Alice Acres (home of Cows and Cones) to see if there were any signs of spring and imagine my disappointment when I found a boarded up ice cream shop, empty green houses and not one sheep or cow in the pasture :(

Knowing that the 20-acre farm had been put up for sale by Farmer Pete Bargmann last year, I was unsure of what he'd be up to this year. My doubts were laid to rest after talking with acting manager Lee Ann Gionet outside the bustling ice cream window.

"Yup we're open for the season," she said cheerfully. "I don't know how but we pulled it off."

So cones up everybody, all is not forsaken. There will be ice cream and flowers in Gales Ferry this summer.

Keep up with Alice Acres and Cows and Cones on Facebook. They are located at 39 Military Highway in Gales Ferry. The greenhouses are open 9 a.m .to 6 p.m. everyday, Cows and Cones is open on Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
