Here's To Getting the Kids Out of the House...and Knowing What To Do With Them

Parents, you’ve survived a week without a snow day! Congratulations. With that main source of winter entertainment—snow—melting away, it’s time to start thinking about leaving the snow boots at home and heading out into the real world. Don’t fret—Patch has some ideas to get you thinking!

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

WHERE/WHEN: Mystic Seaport’s Adventure Series takes place on the third Thursday of the month at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Find out what's happening in Ledyardwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

WHY GO: Anna Tunnicliffe, February’s storyteller, is an American sailor who won the gold medal in the 2008 Olympics. She’s sure to have some great adventures to tell of. Bring your older kids out for a fun and interesting Thursday event!

WHERE/WHEN: The Garde Arts Center in New London on Saturday. Family activities are from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.; movie at 4 p.m.

WHY GO: The afternoon party will be filled with underwater fun! Sea stars, crabs and lobsters will visit from Mystic Aquarium and there’s sure to be plenty of sea-themed crafts to keep those little hands busy. And after a little fun to tire the kiddies out, you can all sit back and enjoy the film OCEANS.

PRICING: Adult tickets are $12; children under 12 are $8. Aquarium members pay $10 for adults and $6 for kids.

WHERE/WHEN: The Shops Concourse at Mohegan Sun. Open Feb. 19 to 25 from noon to 7 p.m. and on Feb. 26 from noon to 5 p.m.

WHY GO: OK, maybe Mohegan isn’t quite the same with this younger gang—but why can’t it still be a ball? Get your camera—digital, disposable or Polaroid—and get some fun family snapshot time in with your favorite (wax) celebrities! Christmas card for 2011, perhaps?

PRICING: Totally free.

WHERE/WHEN: From Feb. 21 to 26, the Children’s Museum in Niantic has it all. Everyday.

WHY GO: Please, like you busy moms have time to set up touch tanks and seashell, seaweed and sand exhibits. Let the museum lend a hand!

PRICING: Check out the membership opportunities! There’s plenty to choose from, including the family membership for $75.

WHERE/WHEN: The Stonington Community Center is hosting an afternoon of Toy Story movie fun on Tuesday from 1 to 3:30 p.m. But hey, who says the rest of us can’t steal this fantastic idea?

WHY GO: So here’s the deal. Grab a few of your fellow mom-friends, pick out a fun kid-friendly flick and some snacks, and there you have it—the easiest play date ever! And even better, plan on making it a weekly event! The kids will love it, and moms will, too.

PRICING: Hit up those movie rental machines at the grocery store! Only a buck a night.
