Middle School Renovation Rescinded from May Ballot

The renovations would cost more than a new building.

In a letter to the Town Council Chairman Linda Davis dated April 12, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Graner requested that the appropriation of $45 million for the design and construction of the middle school renovation and additions be rescinded from the May ballot due to cost of the project.

“I am making this request because the Board of Education learned today that the cost of the proposed “Renovate-as-New” project would exceed the cost of a new building,” wrote Graner in the letter.

Graner went on to say that the State Department of Education requires local school board to verify that the renovations will cost less than a new facility. Graner wrote that the school board will re-submit a renovation plan in the next several months.

Ledyard Public Schools is out on vacation this week and an attempt to reach Dr. Graner was unsuccessful.
