Lawrence + Memorial Gets STAR Certification For Survivorship Care

New London hospital can start offering rehabilitation serves with qualification

The following is a press release from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital:

Lawrence + Memorial Hospital has earned STAR Program® Certification from the Massachusetts-based Oncology Rehab Partners, leading experts in the field of survivorship care. By becoming STAR certified, L+M is leading the way by offering its patients excellent cancer rehabilitation services.

STAR Program Certification uniquely qualifies L+M to offer premium oncology rehabilitation services to survivors who suffer from debilitating side effects caused by treatments.

To receive its certification, L+M executed Oncology Rehab Partner’s unparalleled STAR Program Certification, a conventional medicine and evidence-based standardized model of oncology rehabilitation service delivery, successfully implementing the program’s evaluation and treatment protocols and rehabilitation training.

These services are covered by health insurance providers and will be offered to patients by a knowledgeable and sensitive medical staff that is specially trained to work with survivors of all forms of cancer.

Specialty caregivers from a pool of disciplines -- including physicians, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dieticians, mental health professionals and others -- will work together with each patient on a personalized rehabilitation plan to increase strength and energy, alleviate pain, and improve daily function and quality of life.

STAR Program Certification from Oncology Rehab Partners provides hospitals and cancer centers with the tools needed to quickly and effectively implement an exceptional survivorship care plan.

“Combined with the opening of our new cancer center later this year, this is another step we are taking to provide the best possible care to our patients,” said Bruce D. Cummings, president and chief executive officer of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Julie Silver, MD, co-founder of Oncology Rehab Partners and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, congratulated L+M on its certification.

“L+M should be commended for its commitment to providing cancer survivors with comprehensive cancer rehabilitation services,” said Silver, herself a cancer survivor.
