Ledyard Farmers' Market Season Begins Today

Here's what you'll find at the market today.

People driving through Ledyard this summer will notice a lot more foot traffic in the town center and will hear something that sounds a lot like music coming from the fairgrounds on Wednesdays.

Market Master Bob Burns said 10 farms will help kick off the farmers’ market today and shoppers can expect to see strawberries, squash, lettuce, potatoes, rhubarb, apples, pea shoots, buckwheat lettuce, honey, baked goods, cheese, pizza, and Sno cones.

Farmers from the following farms are expected to be at today’s market: Aiki Farms, Hidden Brook Farms, Burton Farms, 18th Century Purity Farm, Sugar Maple Farms, Beltane Farm, Fire & Fleece Farm, Mayflower Soaps, Rowanberry Gardens, and Meadowstone Farms.

This year’s market is being run a bit differently because Burns invited businesses to be apart of the market.

Burns said the following businesses will provide some type of product or service at the farm market today: Breads & Cookies, Holdridge's Nursery, Lou's Service, Gales Ferry Acupuncture, Pop's Sno Cones, Fireside Pizza, and “special multi flavored crepes will be cooked up by chef Dominique, of international fame.”

Burns said participating farmers pooled in money to provide musical entertainment for visitors. The Locals are a professional traditional band that plays original mountain tunes, as well as sea shanties, according to Burns. Their leader, Craig Edwards, is on staff at the Mystic Marine Museum. Dan Thompson, another band member, is also lead fiddler in the Can Kickers, which just finished a national tour. And, Charlie Nolan plays banjo and mandolin. He is from Pawtucket, and plays with The Locals at John’s Pub in Mystic on Monday nights.
