Five things to know for Thursday March 8, 2012

1. Wednesday's warm sun will give way to clouds today, according to noaa.gov: "Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Breezy, with a southwest wind 11 to 14 mph increasing to between 20 and 23 mph. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Tonight, Showers, mainly before 4 a.m."

2. Today, the finance committee will hear the details of these proposed budgets:

  • 1:00 p.m. Mayor John Rodolico
  • 2:00 Finance Department - Finance Director Marcia Hancock
  • 3:00 Capital Improvement Plan
  • 4:00 Parks and Recreation - Director Don Grise
  • 5:00 Emergency Dispatch Center - Paula Smith
  • 5:30 ACO - ACO Kimlyn Marshall and Resident State Trooper James Gilman
  • 6:00 Police Department - Resident State Trooper James Gilman

3. Eighth-graders are invited to participate in an essay contest the state Attorney General is sponsoring in recognition of Law Day on May 1.  The topic is “Should the government pass a law setting a minimum age for kids to join social networking sites?  Or, should it be left up to parents, kids and/or the social networking sites themselves to determine and enforce age restrictions on joining such sites?  If the government should make the rules, what should be the minimum age?” Entries should be no more than two double-spaced pages and submitted to the AG's Office or postmarked by March 28.
