Daily Five: Budget Presentations, Calhoun For Congress and Happy Spring!

Five things to know on Tuesday, March 20.

 

1. The first day of spring is shaping up to be pretty nice. Today is forecast to be mostly sunny, with a high near 67, says noaa.gov. And tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 49.

2. The finance committee continues its 2012-13 budget presentations. Today they’ll hear presentations from the following departments:

  • 2:30 p.m. Economic Development Director Charlie Karno and EDC Vice-Chairman Jeffrey Beacham
  • 3:00 p.m. Planning Director Charlie Karno and Chairman Mike Cherry
  • 3:30 p.m. Public Works/Town Engineer Steve Masalin
  • 4:30 p.m. Library Director Gale Bradbury and Chairman Rebecca Graebner
  • 5:00 p.m. LVES – Director Kathee Ivey and Administrator of Emergency Services

3. If you see Stephanie Calhoun around town, give her a high five. and will make a trip to Washington D.C. in April for the event.

4. The Ledyard Cyber Colonels were awarded $500 to help fund their efforts in the upcoming 2012 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. More than 1,500 high school students are expected to compete in the regional competition, which will be held March 29 through 31 at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

5. Are you interested in helping out local communities during disease outbreaks, natural disasters, flu clinics, practice drills, or general community health outreach? If so, you’re in luck! The Ledge Light Health District Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is looking for volunteers. The orientation meeting is tomorrow at the Ledge Light Health District office, 216 Broad Street, New London. The orientation starts at 5:30 and the meeting will follow at 6:30.
