Daily Five: Last Chance To Address Mayor Pro Tem, Taxing Slot Machines Denied

Five things to know on Monday, April 2.

 

1. April is starting out more typically than March did. Today is supposed to have chance of showers before 8am and mostly cloudy, with a high near 54, according to NOAA.gov. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 29.

2. Mayor John Rodolico is on vacation until Tuesday. Town Council chairman has been mayor pro-tem since Thursday and today's the last chance to make him do mayoral stuff, if you're so inclined.

3. Today’s the first day of ! Ledge Light Health District is holding a series of informational sessions about the small things we can do daily to prevent disease and they’ll be hosting one of those sessions at the Bill Library, this Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

4. The appellate court in New Britain denied the the Zoning Commission’s appeal against the ruling of its case against Mark Coen. The original ruling last year overturned the commission’s decision not to approve a three-family dwelling that would have included one "affordable housing" unit at 83 Inchcliffe Drive. Coen said he will begin building the house as soon as he gets all the permits needed.

5. A federal judge issued a summary judgment in favor of the Mashantucket Pequot tribe in a case involving the tribe’s slot machine vendors. The town’s position was that they can tax property located on the casinos not owned by the tribe. The slot machines are leased to the tribe from out of state manufacturers. Ledyard’s tax assessor said the town is paid approximately $100,000 in property taxes from the slot machine vendor
