Daily Five: No More Discounts To Fill Pools, Egg Hunt Tomorrow

Five things to know on Friday, March 30.

1. It’s beginning to warm up but it won’t be like what we had earlier this month. Today is forcast to be “mostly sunny, with a high near 51 and with northwest wind between 9 and 13 mph,” according to NOAA.gov. But, tonight there is “a chance of rain after midnight, mostly cloudy, with a low around 34,” and there is a 50 percent chance of precipitation.

2. The WPCA will no longer offer discounted rates to customers who want to fill their pools this summer. Traditionally the WPCA would take special orders and offer discounts to pool owners but that will not continue because it was costing the department money.

“This is also an inexact process, because this didn’t account for Ledyard’s cost to treat the water or cover any of Ledyard’s operating overhead," said chairman Bill Saums. “Since we may not be covering our costs on every gallon we sell now, it’s hard to justify offering any discount at all, let alone a discount that doesn’t include our basic costs.  And, responding to each request just adds to the workload of the office staff resulting in overtime or comp time.”

Saums said pool owners have the option of buying water at competitive rates from local pool water companies and/or using town water; but not at the reduced rate.

3. Inner Visions announced the 2012 winners of their annual contest:
