Five Things: Band Concert Tonight

No More Concessions, No Softball Field, More Rigorous Standards

  1. Windy today, with steady rain in the morning and showers continuing in the afternoon. High 48F. E winds shifting to S at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of rain is 90 percent, which rainfall near a half an inch. Tonight cloudy, low 42F.
  2. The Ledyard High School Instrumental Music Concert is tonight, starting at 7:30 in the high school auditorium. Enjoy to the Symphonic Band’s rendition of the classic early jazz number Clarinet Marmalade, or Leroy Anderson's Bugler's Holiday. Ledyard Winds and Ledyard Saxes also will perform, as will LHS Jazz Band. Tickets are $5 or $10 for a household of four.
  3. The Ledyard Education Association, the local teachers union, voted Wednesday not to accept concessions that had been recommended by the school board in an effort to avoid layoffs. Union president Ted Allen said the membership was reluctant because the last round of give-backs was still too fresh.
  4. In other school news, parents gathered at Ledyard Middle School Wednesday to hear a presentation on the Common Core State Standards that are coming to Connecticut. The new, more rigorous standards are driving proposals to create a grades 6-8 middle school, and also all-day kindergarten. Watch for our report.
  5. Kevin Dombrowski, chairman of the Town Council’s Land Use Committee, said the town-owned Clark Farm property will not become a girls softball field, at least not this year. Dombrowski said information provided by the Parks and Recreation-sponsored program was not sufficient to proceed with the plan. As they say, wait until next year.
