Five Things: Friday the 13th

Eagle Watch, Football Banquet, 'I Have a Dream'

  1. Windy today, with rain showers in the morning then partly cloudy in the afternoon. High 47F. Winds SSW at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of rain is 60 percent. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph. Tonight partly cloudy and windy. Low 28F.
  2. Today is Friday the 13th. Take care not to walk under any ladders. And maybe buy a lottery ticket, just in case.
  3. Now this is exciting. Jean Pillo of the Eastern Connecticut Conservation District announced there will be an "Eagle Watch" Saturday, Jan. 14, from 7 a.m. until noon on Poquotanuck Cove. Eagles were spotted the last two years, she said. Mayor Rodolico is planning to be there, and Pillo said it is an amazing event. There are several access launches to the cove, including one off Route 12 south of the bridge, and another off Royal Oak Drive. Call Jean at 860 928-4948, Ext. 605, for more information.
  4. The football program will hold a team banquet and Hall of Fame induction on Sunday, Jan. 15, at 5:30 p.m. at Lake of Isles. The 2011 Colonels who won the ECC Medium Divisional Title and advanced to the Class M State Championship game will be honored, along with the first class of the Ledyard Football Hall of Fame. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by contacting Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jim Buonocore at 860-464-9600 ext. 123 or jbuonocore@ledyard.net
  5. Schools and town offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 16, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The slain civil rights leader would have been 83. A mememorial to King was dedicated this past summer in West Potomac Park, Washington D.C., just steps away from where this great orator delivered his most famous speech, quite possibly the greatest speech ever.
