Five Things: Quakertown Revisited

Soccer Senior Bowlers, 200 Turkeys, Best Game Ever

  1. Mostly sunny skies today, which could make it harder for sleeping for those of you who will be going back to bed after lunch. High 59F. Winds SW at 10 to 15 mph. For those who are still on a reasonable schedule, happy Black Friday and good luck out there today!
  2. Ledyard's thrilling football victory over Thanksgiving rival Fitch was one for the ages. The day was cold and clear, the shiny new bleachers at Mignault Field were filled with cheering fans, and somehow you just knew the home team was going to find a way to pull this one out. It just doesn't get any better.
  3. Last year, when Ledyard Patch was just a pup, we marked Thanksgiving by highlighting photos, circa 1940, from a really cool website dedicated to Quakertown. The site is lovingly maintained by Duane Schultz. If you missed it, and a lot of you had yet to hear of Patch last Thanksgiving, here it is again.
  4. Two Ledyard High School varsity soccer players will be playing in the 2011 Senior Bowl next Sunday at Middletown High School. Gabe May and Zach Ash will be among 13 players from ECC high schools playing for Region 1. Gabe and Zach also made All-ECC Team. Congratulations boys!
  5. This might have been missed in all the pre-holiday fuss. Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation celebrated the season of giving by donating 200 frozen turkeys to local charities and food banks throughout southeastern Connecticut and Rhode Island. But wait, there’s more. The turkeys were actually given to Foxwoods employees – a long-standing tradition at the casino – and 200 employees elected to donate them to local shelters. Nice.
