Five Things to Know Today

CPR Class, Fun Night, Ice Fishing Safety, Remember the Maine

  1. Sunny and breezy today, with a high of 31F and occasional wind gusts over 40 mph. But temps should reach the 40s on Wednesday and Thursday, and are expected to climb into the 50s on Friday. Maybe that Ground Hog was right.
  2. On this date in 1898, the battleship Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor, claiming 266 men. On April 21, 1898, the 10-week Spanish-American War commenced, ending with the Treaty of Paris, which awarded the U.S. temporary control over Cuba and indefinite authority over Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
  3. Ever wonder what you would do if someone you knew were having a cardiac arrest or couldn’t breath? A community CPR/AED class will be offered tonight, Feb. 15, from 6-9 p.m. at Gales Ferry School The cost is $25 for residents or those who work in town; all others: $35.  Call 860-464-8464 to register or for schedule of additional classes being offered.
  4. Family Fun night at the Gales Ferry Community Center Saturday had booked the Ledyard High School A Cabellas singing group for the evening’s entertainment. But when four members of the group were unable to make it, the two remaining members, Breanna Browne and Rachel Miller, forged ahead without them. From all reports, it was an excellent show.
  5. Today’s feature on ice fishing may inspire some residents to try their luck. The state DEP offers these quick safety tips: Always check the ice carefully before venturing out and check repeatedly to make sure that ice thickness is sufficient. Local bait and tackle shops are often excellent resources for current information on ice conditions. And always let someone know where you are going and when you’ll return.
