Five Things to Know Today

March Winds, House Fire, GHS Reading Night, Welcome Home 247th

  1. March begins with a lot of sun, highs in the upper 30s. Not very lion-like, but it will be windy. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
  2. Ledyard and Gales Ferry fire companies, along with other companies from around the region, responded to a house fire Wednesday at 4 Autumn Road, where Douglas Reckamp, 17, was rescued from the basement of the home. Watch today for updates to the story.
  3. A Family Reading Night at Gallup Hill School will take place Wednesday evening, Mar. 2.  The fun starts with a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by guest readers and great stories. The event will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday as well as mark the half-way point of the school's 20-day Read-A-Thon (the goal is 70,000 minutes).  An edible art show also will also be part of the night's festivities!
  4. Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman will welcome home from Afghanistan the 274th Engineer unit today in Windsor Locks. The detachment was mobilized and departed Connecticut in March 2010. After training at Camp Shelby, Miss., it was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  This was the second deployment for the detachment, which previously served in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from March 2003 to April 2004. Watch for coverage later today.
  5. Quote: "March is a tomboy with tousled hair, a mischievous smile, mud on her shoes and a laugh in her voice." --  Hal Borland
