Five Things to Know Today

Redshirt Comments, Forensic Archaeology, Cyber Colonels, Dr. Seuss

  1. Mostly sunny today and cold, with the high only about 27F. Winds out of the north 10 to 15 mph. Partly cloudy tonight, low 16F, with light and variable winds.
  2. Our online Moms Chat on redshirting Wednesday failed to produce a consensus, although we have yet to hear parents who redshirt say later that they have regrets.  There are good arguments on both sides of the question of whether to give those little kids an extra year at home before starting kindergarten.
  3. The United Way of Southeastern Connecticut will be the setting tonight for a lecture by Dr. Nicholas Bellantoni, CT State Archaeologist, who will discuss how forensic techniques are used in archaeology. The talk is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Call 860-287-7400 for more information.
  4. The Ledyard Cyber Colonels were among 26 high school teams awarded a grant from Northeast Utilities to help fund their efforts in the 2011 Connecticut Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. The Ledyard team received $500. The event will take place March 31 to April 2 at Hartford’s Connecticut Convention Center.
  5. Montville Patch editor Carrie Jacobson went all out in her Dr. Seuss birthday tribute on Wednesday. Jacobson, who lives in Gales Ferry, wrote her entire Daily Five in Dr. Seuss verse. You have to see this. It's brilliant.
