Five Things to Know Today

Honoring Veterans, Lobster Days, Farmers Market Opens Wednesday

  1. Today is Memorial Day. For more on that, read this column by Elissa Bass.
  2. Partly cloudy today with isolated thunderstorms possible. Areas of patchy fog. High 83F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 30 percent. Tonight widely scattered showers or a thunderstorm early. Then partly cloudy. Low 67F.
  3. Today, at approximately 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Gales Ferry, Pastor Fr. Brian Converse, who is an officer and chaplin in the National Guard, will dedicate the new flagpole and flag that was recently installed by the Knights of Columbus, per Fr. Brian's request. There will be in attendance veterans plus active military personnel. There will also be a barbecue after the ceremony.
  4. Today is the last day of a three-day Lobster Days Celebration at the Mystic Seaport. Proceeds from the event will support the Rotary Club's community charities, which include college scholarships, Little League and the Stonington Community Center. The boat rental dock will also open for the season over the holiday weekend. Click here for more information.
  5. A note from Bob Burns: The first day of the Ledyard farmers market will be this Wednsday from 4-7 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. This market is unusual in that most of its growers are from Ledyard and most growers are producing organic, chemicals-free, healthy food for the community. Farmers and shoppers wish to thank the Mayor and the Ledyard Town Council for their support and encouragement, with special thanks to the Ledyard Planning & Zoning office, which worked with the state Department of Agriculture to make this wonderful, fresh, inspiring market possible.
