Five Things to Know Today

Tornado Season, Farmers Market, CSI Lecture, Farewell to Paul

  1. Mainly sunny today, high near 70F. Winds WNW at 15 to 25 mph. Clear skies tonight. Low 51F.
  2. Wednesday was the first day of hurricane season. But it was a tornado that struck Springfield, MA, tearing up trees, toppling cars and damaging buildings. At least four storm-related deaths have been reported.
  3. The Ledyard Farmers Market Opened Wednesday. Except for wind, vendors dodged the rain and foul weather that was wreaking havoc farther north. Slim pickin's -- it's still pretty early -- but a good start to the season.
  4. A K-9 officer from the Ledyard Police department will discuss the traning, care and work of canine investigators, followed by a demonstration. The CSI lecture begins tonight at 5:30 p.m. at the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. The free event is sponsored by i5 Teaching Network.
  5. The Ledyard Board of Education said farewell to Paul Kunkemoeller Wednesday night. Kunkemoeller has served on the board for seven years. He and his wife are moving out of town. Board chairwoman Sharon Hightower thanked him for his service and his unfailing commitment to excellence.
