Five Things to Know Today

Roads Clear, CL&P Making Modest Gains, Hot Showers, Recalling Gloria, Great Weekend Ahead

  1. Public Works Director Steve Masalin reported that as of 6 p.m. Thursday there was still a partial obstruction at the Route 117 end of Thomas Road, and otherwise all roads in Ledyard were clear. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
  2. The CL&P outage report showed modest improvement after Thursday, but still more than two thirds of Ledyard – 68 percent – were without power this morning. (Those without power can pick up food and bottled water at Town Hall from noon to 7 p.m. today and for as long the outage lasts.)
  3. Ledyard now has hot showers. A portable shower unit (it’s actually a decontamination unit, and after five days that’s not an overstatement) has been set up at Ledyard Center School, courtesy of the Mashantucket Pequot Fire Department. The showers will be open from noon until 10 a.m. until power is restored.
  4. Andrea McKenzie was in seventh grade when Hurricane Gloria wreaked havoc on the region. She recalls that storm and its aftermath in her column today – which was supposed to run Wednesday but somehow got lost in the shuffle.
  5. The roads are clear, the power is coming back on (albeit slowly), and no one got hurt. Ledyard even has hot showers. And it’s a holiday weekend! There is a free pancake breakfast at the Congregational Church Saturday morning, a Coast Guard Band concert on Sunday, and an art show at Olde Mistick Village featuring Gales Ferry artist Carrie Jacobson, among other fun things to do this weekend. You’ve earned this. So get out and enjoy it.
