Five Things to Know Today

Gales Ferry FD Dedicated 9/11 Memorial, Jazzercise Order Issued, Irene and Diana

  1. Partly cloudy skies today. High 79F. Winds SSW at 10 to 15 mph. Tonight clear to partly cloudy. Low 66F.
  2. A 9/11 memorial was dedicated Sunday at the Gales Ferry Fire Department (see photo at right). The twin columns of polished granite centered in a reflective circle commemorate the victims of 9/11, including 343 New York City firefighters and paramedics.
  3. Could this be the end of the dispute over Jazzercise? Mayor Allyn sure hopes so. Time will tell.
  4. Holdridge's stayed open throughout Irene, even when its generator failed, providing propane, batteries and other essentials to residents, and also helping to unload emergency food and water that was being distributed at the old firehouse in Ledyard Center. (We are told Raya's in Gales Ferry also stayed open, providing "essentials" in Gales Ferry.)
  5. Princess Diana's royal wedding gown was uncrated at Foxwoods on Monday in preparation for the "Celebrating Diana" exhibition that will open to the public on Friday. Watch for our coverage.
