Five Things to Know Today

10-Year War, Fish for Free, Big Game Tonight, Barbecue Smoke-Off

  1. Sunny again today, cooler with light and variable winds. High 66F. Clear skies tonight. Low 53F.
  2. Today is Oct. 7, the 10 anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. The war's purpose and duration will be the topic of our poll question later today. You can listen to what several local residents had to say on the subject.
  3. On Saturday, Oct. 8, you can fish in Connecticut without a fishing license. Another gift from Gov. Malloy (remember he opened the state parks for free the weekend after Irene?). We hope you've been paying attention to all the good advice in Tackle Box these many months. If not, just get some worms and give it a shot.
  4. Big, BIG game tonight. NEW LON DON. Ranked sixth in the state. As Larry Kelley notes, a loss would not necessarily doom Ledyard's season. A win, on the other hand, would be huge, especially on their field. Big, BIG game.
  5. Tomorrow Holdrige's will host its third annual "Smoke-Off" Barbecue Competition. So far there are nine contestants. All cooking will be done on the premises. The judging (and eating) will begin at 2 p.m. Judging this year's barbecue will be WTCY's Jimmy Lane, Mayor Allyn and Richie Vetrano from Valentino's.
