Five Things to Know Today

Homecoming Game, CROP Walk, One-Room Schoolhouse Event, Dessert Day

  1. A wet Friday. Showers and thunderstorms today. A few storms may be severe. High near 70F. Winds SE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain is 80 percent. Thunderstorms in the evening with a few showers possible overnight. Low 57F.
  2. Are you ready for some foot… Oops, I mean, big game tonight versus Stonington. This is Homecoming Weekend, and the Bears are 3-1. The Colonels are coming off their first loss of the season, to New London last week. Should be a good one.
  3. The annual CROP Walk to combat hunger is Sunday, Oct. 16, and this year will include six local churches. Registration begins at 12:45 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Gales Ferry. Walkers will leave the church at 1:30 for either a 6-mile hike, or an abriviated 1.5-mile walk. For more information, or to join the walk, contact Ackie Harley at 860 464-2058, or or by e-mail at sparrow43@comcast.net; or Judy Toth at 860 464-6527, or at bjtoth@comcast.net
  4. Also on Sunday, the Geer Hill One-Room Schoolhouse on Route 117 and the Stagecoach Way Station on Church Hill Road will have an open house from 2-4 p.m. The original school was built in 1735 and Ledyard kids were still attending classes there until 1949, when the Ledyard Center School opened. (Which is to say, we know people who went to that school.) A priceless piece of town history.
  5. Someone told me today is National Dessert Day. Like this is something I would feel the need to confirm. Just sayin’…
