Five Things to Know Today

School Schedule Changes, More Solar Panels, Penguin Death, McMahon For Senate

  1. Mostly cloudy today. High 74F. Winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight considerable cloudiness with occasional rain showers. Low near 65F. 
  2. The Ledyard Board of Education will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in the high school media center. On the agenda is a vote on proposed changes to the school schedule to make up three “Irene” days. 
  3. The school board’s Facilities and Land Use Committee briefly discussed the possibility of installing solar panels on each of the disrict’s schools. Facilities Director Sam Kilpatrick said members generally favored the panels, but requested some additional information. Watch for our report.
  4. The Mystic Aquarium “with great sadness” on Tuesday announced the death of “String,” a 19-year-old female African penguin. String was hatched at Mystic Aquarium on October 4, 1991. Her cause of death is still unknown. An African penguin’s life expectancy is 18 to 20 years in the wild, but and they can live into their mid-30s in zoos and aquariums.
  5. Hope springs eternal for Linda McMahon. The former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO announced Tuesday she will make another run at U.S. Senate, hoping to win the seat being vacated by Sen. Joseph Lieberman.
