Subdivision Approved, School Calendar Reviewed, Major Drug Bust

The week began with a story about Whiz Kid Trey deAndrade, who is hoping to create a community garden this summer to fulfill a requirement for his Eagle Scout badge. 

Also on Monday, local teen Douglas Reckamp was rescued from a house fire on Autumn Road. He was not badly hurt and damage to the house can be repaired. 

Gov. Malloy was in New London this week .he Ledyard Board of Education met and reviewed a proposed school calendar for next year. And a  32-acre subdivision proposed by Steven Watrous off Haley Road was approved .

There was some business news this week. The former Gales Ferry Methodist Church, purchased in December by Olde New England Restorations, will become retail space.

The topic of this week’s Moms Chat was “redshirting.” The day after the chat, the state legislature’s Education Committee failed to approve a plan to raise the age for children starting kindergarten.

A Ledyard man was arrested for heroin possession and possession with intent to sell, among other charges.  

Tom Fagin used the current Scientology scandal to recall Ledyard’s Own Prophetess Jemima Wilkinson. 

In sports, the Ledyard High School girls’ basketball team made it to the state Class M tournament this year before falling to Ellington High School, 68-42, in the first round. The Ledyard Middle School boys’ basketball team finished the season with a 9-2 record, giving hope to a high school program that has struggled in recent years.
