Ledyard 175th Events Peak on Saturday

Busy Day Starts With Tree Planting in Front of Town Hall

In the month-long celebration to mark Ledyard’s 175th birthday, this Saturday, June 11, is huge. Here’s the lineup:

  • A Tree Planting at Town Hall starts at 9 a.m., courtesy of Sprigs & Twigs. Remember those big maple trees in front of Town Hall that were cut down last winter? At last something will be planted to replace them.
  • A Historical Walking Tour of Ledyard at 1 p.m. leaves from Ledyard Center School. Town Historian Kit Foster will lead the tour, as he has other tours this year, including Gales Ferry and the Highlands.  http://www.ledyardhistory.org/
  • Bill Library Historical Room is holding an Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. This normally locked room is the inner sanctum of the Ledyard Historical Society. Very cool.
  • A Ledyard Police Department Open House is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Did you know the town’s police department is based in what was once a horse barn? If you’ve ever wondered what the inside of the police station looked like, but never had occasion to find out, this is your chance. http://www.town.ledyard.ct.us/index.aspx?nid=66
  • Dime Bank is holding an Open House 9 a.m. to noon
  • Alice Acres and Cows & Cones in Gales Ferry is throwing a Ledyard Birthday Party from 1 to 4 p.m. (rain date Sunday, June 12). Free birthday cake donated by Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Services at the pavilion. Ambulance and fire truck tours. Fire fighter gear and smokehouse on site. Specials include a small cone or dish of ice cream for $1.75, and 10” hanging baskets $17.50
  • Gales Ferry Cheezy Fung Fu Movie Day & Open House at the Gales Ferry Community Center starts at 11 a.m. Gales Ferry Karate will sponsor the showing of the original “Karate Kid” movie, provide cheezy popcorn and cheezy pizza. Free...but bring your appetite!

And also bring your Town of Ledyard 175th Birthday Celebration Passport. Get it stamped at each event you attend. With 15 stamps (out of a possible 30 events) you will become eligible for great prizes, like an overnight at Stonecroft Inn, or a free riding lesson package at Outback Stables.

You don’t have to be a town resident to play. Winners will be announced at the Ledyard Fair.
