Memorial Day Parade Today in Ledyard Center

For 24 years, Ledyard Lions Have Produced and Sponsored Parade

The Ledyard Center Memorial Day Parade will step off at approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday, May 29, and will march from the Ledyard Fairgrounds along Col. Ledyard Highway to the high school. As in the past, this year’s parade is produced and sponsored by the Ledyard Lions Club.

Thirty-one participants, including groups and individuals, will march in the parade. The parade will muster at the fairgrounds at 12:30 p.m. The opening ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. and the parade will begin directly afterward.

The Memorial Day ceremonies will include a wreath-laying at the veterans garden, an invocation by Lions president Steve Novic, a flag raising and playing of the National Anthem by the Silver Cornet Band, and remarks by parade Grand Marshal Maj. Joseph Keefe of the U.S. Army.

Marching this year will be the Ledyard High School Band, three fife and drum groups and the cornet band. A full complement of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will participate, in addition to floats, fire trucks, vintage automobiles and horses.

Novic said this is the 24th year the Lions have produced the parade for the town since it moved to Ledyard Center from the Vality parking lot in Gales Ferry.

“There was a break for about three years before we took it over,” Novic said. “A lot of people come out and watch it. We always get a good turnout.”

A tent will be set up at the high school, where food will be provided for the marchers.
