Some Lost Power Today for First Time

Outage in Gales Ferry Followed Two Loud Bangs

The number of town residents without power dropped to 30 percent today, but that number included some new residents who had not lost power when Tropical Storm Irene hit a week ago.

Residents in the Pheasant Run/Christy Hill area of Gales Ferry reported a loud bang before the power went out earlier this afternoon. Then, shortly after 3 p.m., a second loud bang was heard coming from the Sherwood Forest area.

CL&P spokeswoman Katie Blint said such fluctuations could be part of the restoration process. "We may need to take some people offline to put others back on," she said.

With so many residents still without power across the state, Blint said she could not give detailed information about the outage or how long it would last. "Hopefully it will not be an extended period of time."

But she said the loud bangs, described by residents as "explosions," could be nothing more than breakers doing their job.

"These fluctuations could happen until everyone is restored," Blint said. Those affected, she said, may call CL&P customer service at 800 286-2000.

Statewide, Blint said the restoration process is ahead of schedule, with 68,000 customers still without power -- or about a tenth of those who lost power in the storm.

She said CL&P expects to have 99 percent of its customers restored by Monday.
