Stairway Is Gateway Toward Economic Development

Officials say Ledyard Fairgrounds could be the site of much more activity and business.

The center of Ledyard took three new steps in the direction of economic development Wednesday when town officials and State Rep. Tom Reynolds announced the completion of the town center project.

The new stairway, sidewalk and landscaping are meant to provide a welcoming entrance into the fairgrounds, which will have an expanded use in the future, according to Jeffrey Beecham, the chairperson of the Economic Development and Town Center Committees.

According to Town Councilor Bill Saums, the town used an economic development grant to hire local architecture firm Kent and Frost.

"Architect Chad Frost designed a concept plan with the town center committee and ultimately settled on a phase I plan to build the stone wall topped by a fence, with steps and landscaping to replace the old chain link fence that defined the Fair Grounds," said Saums in an email.

Saums, Beecham and Reynolds expressed a continued interest in developing the site to attract people and business to the town's center.
