Week In Review: Good Business News, Town Budget Adopted

A round up of the week's top stories on the Ledyard Patch.

While children and their parents were on spring vacation this week, Ledyard officials were up to the serious task of balancing the budget. primarily based on cost savings in budgeted snow removal account. The town and school board collaborated and came up with 300,000 in savings.

The committee made some other cuts and they decided not to fund Mayor John Rodolico’s request to move the police department to the former Gales Ferry school.

Later in the week, the Town Council to adopted a , which is comprised of a $19,624,588 general government budget and a $29,544,964 education budget and does not change the tax rate next year.

The Historical Society hosted a forum on with the hopes that many alums would attend the forum and share memories to be archived by the society. Approximately 50 people turned out to the event and shared photos and memories of the historic era.

Dale Treadway remembers his schoolteacher, Miss. Capone, who had students divide the playground in half with a line of rocks. He said if a girl was caught on the boys’ side, she had to wear a tie but if a boy was caught on the girls’ side he had to carry around a doll.

“It was really embarrassing for us,” he said remembering that he did have to carry a doll at least once. “It was the third degree.”

And, Betty Perkins said, “We all kind of taught each other and I think that’s why we had such a good education because we had everything down pat by the time we got to our grade,” she said. “Everybody would either do their own work or help each other.”
