Week In Review: Outsourcing Emergency Dispatch And Farms, Fairgrounds Open For Business

The week's top stories on the Ledyard Patch.

 

Some parts of the world and beyond had the pleasure of seeing Venus transit the sun, a once-in-a-couple-lifetimes event. There is tons of footage out there contributed by people who with great equipment. This one has high definition pictures and video of the sun’s furious surface but best of all, Venus’ journey is set to tentative, yet triumphant soundtrack. It’s adorable.

June is the month to register your dog AND enter . To register your dog you a current rabies vaccination date must be on file, or you must present a current certificate of rabies vaccination with an original veterinarian signature (not a copy of). It costs $8 to register a neutered or spayed dog, and $19.00 for an unaltered dog. Register your dog at the Town Clerk’s office. Then, upload a photo of your dog into the Ledyard Patch Top Dog photo contest and he or she will be eligible for prizes and most of all, the glory of being Ledyard’s Top Dog.

Mayor John Rodolico and the Public Safety Commission held a in the region to talk about outsourcing Ledyard’s fire, EMS and police dispatch. The meeting has sparked a large response on Facebook and in the article.

Maugle Sierra Vineyards sees the financial benefits of consolidation and wrote, “Good fiscal move to out source this function. Wonder what else could be combined with neighboring town &/or city governments or out sourced?”

Others were concerned for the dispatchers who may become unemployed and that and public safety would be jeopardized if Ledyard is to be dispatched by people who are unfamiliar with the town’s idiosyncrasies.

A Patch User named Sarah wrote, “I like the fact that we have dispatchers who focus solely on our town. They know the details such as the fact that there are several roads that have the same name but different suffix (drive/road/extension). They are familiar with the names of residents and probably many of our pets, as well.”

And Patch User Liz Smith said, “Hopefully before anyone makes a rash decision to get rid of this vital service we provide, they look into ALL the issues, not just the bottom line.”
