Week In Review: Strawberries, Commissions Consolidation Under Consideration

The paused from a busy day and answered some questions for Patch readers. The Ledyard alum has been teaching in Ledyard for 14 years and here’s why people think Fagan “gets” Ledyard.

“Perhaps she meant that I am a student of Ledyard, both literally and figuratively.  I am a product of the school system and therefore am privy to that perspective of the schools, but I am also deeply invested in the district and, in various leadership roles over the past several years, I have gained a broader perception of our strengths and needs.  I “get Ledyard” in that I see us clearly.  I see our rich traditions, but I also see our as-yet-untapped potential.  I recognize how unique our student body is, fed as we are by twelve feeder towns; I understand how hard-working our teachers are; I see how eager so many of our parents are to be involved and informed.”

The Town Council tabled a vote to when several people, including volunteers on each commission, spoke in opposition to the proposal.

Peter Gardner, a longtime developer and resident of Ledyard, spoke in favor of a combined commission because it would be efficient.

The proposal has been under consideration by committees in the past for reasons of efficiency and workload reduction but some people think neither of those results are guaranteed and the risks of consolidating the two 5-person commissions (plus 3 alternated each) into one 5-person commission (with 3 alternates) isn’t worth the potential benefits.

A Patch user named Sue wrote, “Keep the two commissions in place.......developers would love to see them combined to streamline the process without careful consideration for the good of the townspeople.”

Ledyard’s Top Dog was announced Friday. Maddy Shoes won a majority of votes and truly earned the #1 dog tag. Keep the prizes and glory coming her way and

The team there worked through the night to deliver 11 puppies Saturday morning and that was in addition to the 8 puppies that were recently dropped off.  Donations are always accepted and but adopting a puppy and caring for him or her would be a nice gift for the shelter and yourself.

The National Honor Society came up with while having lots of fun.
