Go Fish – Cheap Family Fun

Take advantage of this years fishing for some good family fun.

This Saturday, April 21st, is opening day for fishing. What are you and your family doing?

Ledyard (and its surrounding areas) are great places for fishing because of all the natural fishing holes. So, jump in your car with your family and head out for a good day of fishing. Let the preparations begin!

First, you need your fishing license (for 16 and older). You can receive a license at an online sportsmen licensing system, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, or fishing stores. For inland fishing, a license costs only $28 and lasts until the end of December.

Then you need poles and equipment. On the inexpensive side, a pole costs about $30-$40. This is practically nothing, considering it can be used for years.

Finally, you need a tackle box with things like extra hooks, bait/worms, and bobbers. Before you head out, it’s also a good idea to pack a cooler with snacks, sandwiches, and water because you can be out for a long time (sometimes in the heat).

Fishing is usually considered a male-only activity; however this should not be true. I went fishing with my dad for the first time when I was just 2 years old, and I look forward to going with him each year. I have no problem touching the worms and fish, and I really don’t mind getting all muddy. It’s just part of all the fun. Plus it gives me a good chance to bond with my dad.

I think that more girls need to participate in fishing because it is not only fun, but it would bring a lot of fathers and daughters, siblings, and families closer together. Fishing can be a good chance to get away from everyone’s hectic schedules and all the technology taking over our daily lives. Family time, without any interruptions, is long overdue.
