Ledyard Adoptions

Ups and Downs!

This is a very busy time of the year for us. We have our frequent "runners" who somehow manage to get out and play no matter what their owners do...LOVE YOU TOBY! Stay home!

We had a horrifying evening on Sunday. A wonderful dog, adopted out by us just over a year ago was hit and killed by a car at 1849 Center Groton Road. She had been on her tie out and somehow got loose and ran into the road. A witness saw and heard a red and white (Harry's) taxi cab driver after he pulled over to check his cab for damage say that he felt "something" hit his car. Well maybe the gorgeous 65 pound dog laying in the road attempting to breathe would have given him a clue as to what he hit!

We are working on finding out this driver's identity. The law states if you hit a dog you are required by law to stop and notify the owner or the police and wait for help to arrive. Otherwise if you leave the scene before the police arrive you have commited a crime. Anyone with more information please call Ledyard Animal Control at 860 464-9621.

Ledyard Fire Department Chief Daggett happened to be driving by and provided assistance after many cars drove around this dog, whose tail was still attempting to wag! His crew came by and through service above and beyond the call of duty were able to use donated animal rescue equipment and provide Tempy with oxygen, a stretcher for transport and the knowledge on how to provide compressions trying to save this pup's life.

I arrived as they were loading her up and when I recognised her, I lost it a bit. I gave her a hug and told her I loved her, and gave the rescue crew her information. She was brought to EVET in Waterford but despite everyone's heroic efforts Tempy passed away.

I will miss your happy, smiling, wiggly self, Temperance Simmons! aka TEMPY!

The week progressed fast after this horrible night. And we are proud to announce that we have adopted out 4 dogs this week! A handsome white German Shepherd, A silly long haired German Shepherd, a 10-year-old Jack Russel mix and Reeses, the gorgeous Bully in our picture featured. We still have two wonderful pups that need a forever home.

Toby was signed over by a family who got him from a "rescue" and it wasnt a good fit for them. He is a shepherd/corgi mix, neutered male, loves you once he knows you! Loves to fetch and play.

We also have Bricca, another dog signed over. She was brought up from the south and adopted by a family that had no idea what her breed was and how to care for her. She is 1 year old, a lab/husky/chow mix. Blue eyes full of intelligence but also mistrust. She is very shy and her new family must understand she needs patience and understanding. Once she knows shes safe she is playful, fun and very loving.
