Hoodie Rallies....Really?

Race in America

First let me start by saying, if the police conclude that George Zimmerman hunted and then executed Trayvon Martin, then we should tie a 103-foot rope around his neck and drop him from a 110 foot tree. That's right, if Zimmerman is guilty, then he should swing.

However some 30-plus days after the incident the police have not produced enough evidence to arrested Zimmerman. Do you think the Sanford Florida Police department is in cahoots with Zimmerman?  Do you think they have all conspired to withhold evidence so Zimmerman will go free? Please! Cops are cops, and they are trained to bust the guilty and protect the innocent. If the Sanford police officers thought they could lock up Zimmerman, he would already be staring at the prison yard from an 8X8 cell. What would the Sanford police have to gain by suppressing evidence in this case?

Good Morning America reported this - In addition, an eyewitness, 13-year-old Austin Brown, told police he saw a man fitting Zimmerman’s description lying on the grass moaning and crying for help just seconds before he heard the gunshot that killed Martin.

The initial police report noted that Zimmerman was bleeding from the back of the head and nose, and after medical attention it was decided that he was in good enough condition to travel in a police cruiser to the Sanford, Fla., police station for questioning. He was not arrested.

Again I ask what would be the motivation to fabricate this story? Is it possible that Zimmerman is lying? Yes absolutely!. Is it possible that the eye witnesses were wrong? Sure it was dark anything could have happened. Is it possible the whole thing was racial? I guess.....However,...Now to the real reason for the blog.........

Al Sharpton and the Reverend Jesse Jackson were so completely irresponsible and disgracful in their comments following the event that it led to nationwide escalation of racial tensions.

The fact that Zimmerman is Hispanic not white was meaningless. Sharpton and Jackson led another wide spread effort to create hatred and distrust along the racial razors edge. And sadly they succeeded.

Rallies in just about every corner of this country were showing support and solidarity for the now martyred Trayvon Martin. Hoodies everywhere!!.A fashion and political statement all in one.

Let me ask you all just a few final questions. What if Zimmerman is telling the truth? What if Martin did assault Zimmerman? What if he was going for Zimmermans gun? What if he struck Zimmerman with a blows that eventually would have killed him? Where would Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton be? What if the police produce evidence that backs Zimmerman's story? Will the holy reverends admit their mistakes?....... And by the way, where were both of the reverends, when a pack of black youths in New London hunted down and killed Matthew Chew? ......Nowhere?...that's right..well maybe they were hoodie shopping.....

Over-confident gun toting cowboy + over-confident teenager who has just been confronted x Fl Stand Your Ground Law = DISASTER The fact that Zimmerman used over -the-top excessive force to confront or report a suspicious character as a neighborhood watch combined with a teenager being stopped by some couch potato with a gun would be trouble in any city with any race.....I dont believe it was racial with the exception of Zimmerman seen a black youth in a hoodie (that part was profiling) that all thiese series of bad judgements and mistakes have led to this.....this would happen anywhere again! What watch captain in CT even confronts strangers let alone with a gun exposed???? Zimmerman should've reported it to the police and let the professionals handle it and then went back to the couch and watched tv! His excessive and overly confident actions instigated all this. Hoody or No Hoody.....would Zimmerman have reacted the saem to an asian or white teenager in a hoodie? Think about that for a minute....
Anthony Fernando April 12, 2012 at 05:40 PM
Mistake #1: Trevon should've had an umbrella (yeah right, what teenager would?) Mistake#2: Zimmerman should never have brought the gun out unless in a dire situation once attacked. Mistake#3: Zimmerman did not take teh police's direction to "Stop following and go back to your house". Mistake#4: Teenagers never respond well to a stranger approaching them with a gun (who would?) The entire incident was a series of mistakes and bad judgement calls.....mostly leading to Zimmerman becasue he was the adult, he was the gun-carrying adult, and he was in a perceived position of power as neighborhood watch captain! He is guilty.....of premeditated murder...NO, but wreckless manslaughter or somethign....YES!
Gene Bartholomew April 12, 2012 at 05:40 PM
Money corrupts and controls Ed, that is why we are stagnant and US CEO's are making 300-400% more than their foreign counterparts. And republican voters are supporting that.
Anthony Fernando April 12, 2012 at 05:41 PM
PS: Wearing "Hoodies" in solidarity is just plain stupid. Now everyone is going to be pushing tensions all around the nation.....stupid. This will create a situation where hooded crimianls can come and go freely because everyone is doing it!
Gene Bartholomew April 12, 2012 at 06:07 PM
yes,he was charged with 2nd degree murder, this is different from manslaughter. The prosecution generally goes for charges they think they can prove beyond a reasonable doubt. 2nd degree murder is a non-premeditated killing, resulting from an assault in which death of the victim was a distinct possibility. Second degree murder is different from First Degree Murder which is a premeditated, intentional killing, or results from a vicious crime such as arson, rape, or armed robbery. 1st degree is pre meditated. They probably are concluding this because he was told by police to stop following him and the screams on the 911 tape are Trayvons. His refusal to stop following Trayvon signal fixation and intent.
Gene Bartholomew April 12, 2012 at 06:12 PM
In Florida it is regarded as follows: 2nd Degree murder is considered in Florida to be : Murder with a Depraved Mind Murder with a Depraved Mind occurs when a person is killed, without any premeditated design, by an act imminently dangerous to another and evincing a depraved mind showing no regard for human life. The primary distinction between Premeditated First Degree Murder and Second Degree Murder with a Depraved Mind is that First Degree Murder requires a specific and premeditated intent to kill. The minimum sentence the Judge can impose is 16 3/4 years or a maximum- •Up to Life in prison. •Up to Life on probation. •Up to $10,000 in fines.
Anthony Fernando April 12, 2012 at 06:16 PM
Good Info Gene, thank you! I agree with what you said earlier that Zimmerman probably pannicked but he is the one would decided to go against the police advice and continue following trevon...
Jeff Brown April 12, 2012 at 06:23 PM
I agree 100 percent Anthony and once you take all the b.s. politics out of the discussion it's a pretty obvious case i would think. The only place i might disagree is if Zimmerman was told to stop following and go home and he still went after Trayvon i'd call it murder.
Gene Bartholomew April 12, 2012 at 07:27 PM
it is, 2nd degree murder, 1st degree is where you had a plan like the Manson family or Dahmer or a mob hit, they have to charge him with what they think a jury will agree to beyond an reasonable doubt. I'm surprised, I thought they would go for manslaughter, they have more info than is in the press.
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 07:53 PM
One little problem, the gun was not exposed and Zimmerman was only made aware during the fight that Mr. Martin saw it. And yet again the only EYEwitnesses said that Zimmerman was going to his vehicle, he had indeed exited but at some point decided to return to the vehicle and Mr. Martin then turned and followed and then attacked him. This precludes Trayvon being considered under the stand your ground law as he attacked a retreating person. The problem with this continued arguing about race is that both of these men are "minorities" and the only time it was mentioned at all that Trayvon was black was because the police asked specifically is he white, black or Hispanic. Mr. Zimmerman (NBC News not with standing) is not a "white" man, so how about a little intellectual honesty. Or is it now that Hisapnic/Latino folks are now also haters of black Americans also? Because if this is so.. well then maybe this is becoming a bit paranoid.
jackie steele April 12, 2012 at 07:53 PM
WOW. JUST WOW. the ignorance here is overwhelming. the idea that the MASSIVE amount of racial tension in this country has to do with hoodies is absurd. So the hate, and vile and outright racist aggression is all because ppl disagree on this one case?? really? its not a common occurrence in american society? some of you really need to take your heads out of the sand. Matthew Chews case got local attention and arrests because his friends, family and community did EXACTLY what they should have done - stood up and demanded answers! they held vigils and walks and fundraised for a fund in his honor(hopefully someone will post those links so ppl may donate)...but apparently thats only a good idea defending a white kids murder?? LISTEN TO YOURSELVES. everyone has a right to stand up and defend their community and demand justice. not just when it fits a certain agenda.
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 08:00 PM
Again the only eyewitnesses say that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman as he was going back to his car, thus no he would no longer be considered to be defending himself. As far as her being swayed, the first thing she did was visit the family and pray with them that she succeed in prosecuting Zimmerman. Not exactly being a neutral representative of the state. Makes you wonder what she would do if she found exculpatory evidence.
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 08:04 PM
First this is not NYC, New Haven or even New London it is a sleepy little suburb in a gated community. Next he did not attempt to detain or even stop Trayvon as far as anyone knows you are making an assumption. That given he was stupid and reckless and so he will pay, but again Manslaughter would be an assured guilty plea.. hell it seems most of us agree on that. But this 2nd Degree charge sounds like an assured not guilty, and then where will we be?
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 08:07 PM
Gene how in the heck are they going to prove a depraved mind? Even Trayvons Mom came out and said she thought it was a accident? Again Manslaughter and you get conviction, Murder anything and you get not guilty or a hung jury and rioting in the streets. Sounds like a bad thing to me.
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 08:11 PM
You know, actually again I can put myself in someone else's shoes and I can feel for the folks that are feeling affected by this. And no no one should be targeted by dress or skin tone. So those folks out there that honestly feel this let em march. Maybe the loss of Trayvon can do some good by preventing this happening ever again.
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 08:15 PM
Read this ... this is what the charge should have been. 2nd Degree Manslaughter The killing of a human being by the act, procurement, or culpable negligence of another, without lawful justification according to the provisions of chapter 776 and in cases in which such killing shall not be excusable homicide or murder, according to the provisions of this chapter, is manslaughter, a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.
Alan Green, Jr. April 12, 2012 at 09:14 PM
THE Jackie Steele?! Right on, Sister! One thing this has shown me is that I've had my own biases relative to hoodies - and I realize that's really just the tip of the iceberg relative to my biases. What I realize is we don't need to judge each other by appearances. We need to open ourselves to the positive aspects of the stranger, not assume they're harmful or ill-motivated. Sure, I prefer to see the person I'm saying hey to, but I don't need to. So, just as Mathew Chew has taught lesson 1, let's let Trayvon Martin be lesson 2. So, hopefully we can avoid either type of tragic loss like these in the future. We all have to learn from these things.
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 09:30 PM
No I think you need to take your head out of the sand. There is a whole wide world out there and most of us don't look at everything that happens everyday as an affirmation or denial of racism. Racism is rampant only in the minds of the Race industry, the Sharpton's the Jackson's. They need to have constant reason for fund raising and race baiting to keep "the fight" alive, that way they and their ilk keep the paychecks rolling. Most of us are too damned busy living and working to be worried about the fading specter of racism. At least it would fade if people didn't use it to make a living.
Alan Green, Jr. April 12, 2012 at 09:39 PM
Sorry, Ed - I disagree - there's a great NPR segment on not long ago on how it's wishful thinking to view us as living in a post-racial society. Even without the vocal likes of a sharpton or jackson, there's still systemic racism - both subtle and overt. http://m.npr.org/news/front/122701272?page=0
Anthony Fernando April 12, 2012 at 09:41 PM
"Hoodies" are legal and socially acceptabel attire BUT they do create partial camoflage or hidden identity which create possible suspicions (ie...this case or the huge warning signs at your local bank which restrict use of hoodies and sun glasses while inside), knowing that doens't mean you have to abide by it and certainly when a teenager is told anything they rarely agree. I was there and I had my share of rebellious behavior but thank God nobody shot me over it.
Anthony Fernando April 12, 2012 at 09:45 PM
Opinions and Assumptions.....my point exactly! This entire case is more so opinions and assumptions at this point, the few witnesses have only seen bits and pieces, nobody will ever truly know the truth. The investigators obviously have more than they're letting on if they went for Murder 2 rather than manslaughter. Absolutely, Sanford, FL is more like Waterford or East Lyme than NYC but thats my point, if it could happen there it could happen anywhere.
Anthony Fernando April 12, 2012 at 09:50 PM
There are way too many "here-says" right now! Some say Zimmerman was heading back to the car, he actually was naive enough to turn his back and walk to the car? If he did, how were they viewed struggling in the grass with Trevon under him? Again, gross errors in judgement on both of them, mostly Zimmerman as he was the man with the gun , an adult, and a supposed neighbor watch authority figure. IF you wander around your community bullying every kid, sooner or later one of them is going to "stand his ground"! Priority Number One: Youre a neighborhood watch guy not a policeman.....put yourself in "check" and do what the neighborhood watch program is designed to do: Observe and Report....not engage and fight!
Anthony Fernando April 12, 2012 at 09:57 PM
Hey...sorry but I have lived the entire "hoodie" experiment and it truly does raise tension depending on who is wearing them! I'm white and my wife is black, I can walk around all day in a hoodie and nobody questions it but if she does it and its dark...LOOK OUT! Its just a fact of life in modern day America, we ALL have some level of racial bias.....people who say they dont are flat out liars! It is my most strongest opinion that if Trevon was a tall skinny white boy he would have never rasied any suspicions with Zimmerman or anyone else.....but the sad truth of today's world is that he, as a black kid raises suspicions with not only white people but all races (even some blacks).....sad but the truth.
Edward Jones April 12, 2012 at 10:03 PM
Not post racial, that is an impossibility. But most of us never even think about race, I have friends and family and then there is everyone else. The race industry is never not thinking about race, it is all they do.
Eric Auer April 12, 2012 at 11:48 PM
Anthony is spot on if the the boy was white an arrest would have been automatic, no gun no death.
Varnaud April 13, 2012 at 12:13 AM
I beg to differ, Mr. Brown! Obviously, you are not a darker-skinned person. If you have any darker-skinned friends, ask them if they even think about race. I'm sure you'll be surprised with the answer. as far as some people go, and I've actually heard it spoken with my own ears, our President is even referred to as "that N***** in the White House"! The naivete of those who believe this isn't the case are sadly mistaken.
Varnaud April 13, 2012 at 12:19 AM
Edward, remember that the prosecution has the burden of proof. Do you really think they would've gone for 2nd degree murder over manslaughter if they didn't think they would be able to prove the case...especially with the specter of what could happen with an acquittal? Obviously, they have more evidence as a result of their investigation than what's been pieced together by the media!
Edward Jones April 13, 2012 at 12:52 AM
Unfortunately I do, I think it is an over reaction and trying to placate the mob. It is a hideous miscalculation. First problem how do you get an unbiased jury that represents Sanford? This will definitely be a racial cross section and this kind of thing has an unfortunate habit of resulting in hung juries. He walks and the shit hits the fan. If they were smart they would go for a Manslaughter and try to plea it... of course maybe that will happen shoot high and then plead it down. But even that gives a lot of folks a bad taste, we will hear charges of favoritism as Dad is a former judge.
Get Real April 13, 2012 at 02:12 AM
This is all sad. Regardless of color the kids skin or th shooters skin, The kid should not have been shot. However, this has not been the debate in whole. Instead some attention seekers have turned this into a racial bigatry. The fact is, who cares what color he was? Stop making everythng about color. In fact, African Americans, or whatever, need to stop making it about color as well. Be proud and stop making it worse by spreading racial hatred yourselves. One mans action does not make for a country full of racial hatred. Not everyone is a racist and not everyone wants to hear the racial disperity that is also being spread by those that are claiming that they are being profiled themselves. Lets all just get a grip, even though it is just a hope. Fact is, black, white, hispanic, chinese, japanaese, gay, straight, bi-sexual, we are all profiled by everyone else everyday, by all races and genders. Once people start realizing that, then people can start to move on from it. Until all such self-profiling "minorities" also admit that they are just as guilty, nothing will be accomplished. Truth is, this may never stop because the truth hurts worse than making claims of profiling. Accepting that those that are arrested may be guilty, and that the truth that people make mistakes, and it is not all about race is necessary. Waiting to hear facts is imperative and not jumping on the nad wagon of hatred, often by so called reverands in necessary. That is all.....
constance stripling April 14, 2012 at 03:58 PM
Mr Jones, how in the heck do you proove a depraved mind? Just ask the military. They seem to know how to spot one when it comes to avoid paying veterans.HMMM? As soon as the OVER USED" kool aid drinking" is mentioned, the conversation is done. It reveals a mind set that is not open . Both the left and right use the kool aid metaphore as an indication that they believe the other is unable to think independently. Kool aid drinkers, the new buzz word for zombie. That will surely put the kaybosh on open dialogue.Often one side, or person, is not satisfied to simply make a comment but is looking to win or make a convert. When that fails they go to the kool aid insult. Conversation done.
