HYPHEN

It's wonderful to have pride in your ancestries lineage, but how about pride in your American history?

  • I hope this blog does not come across as to preachy, but I am sick and tired of African-Americans...... I thought that would get your attention!!! For that matter I am also sick of Hispanic-Americans, and Italian-Americans. The same disdain can be said for German, Jewish, Irish, Cuban, Greek, Asian, Scottish, Egyptian, and ALL Americans who hyphenate their nationality.
  • I am an American. Yes, I have Italian ancestry, but I am 100% born and bred American. Baseball, Apple Pie ,and Chevrolet all the way. (Although I drive a Ford). I bleed Red White and Blue. I would NEVER ever dream of flying any flag other than Stars and Stripes. It's wonderful to have pride in your ancestries lineage, but how about pride in your American history? This is where you live, and if you are lucky, where you work.
  • Now there are some exceptions to my rule; if you are fresh off the boat and still smell of Opium, then by all means throw your chest out when you talk about your homeland of Afghanistan. If you can't get the Rosy images of slaughtered women and children out of your head, then you can be proud and hold your head high when you talk about the grasslands of Sudan. If you are uno generation welfare recipient and still own the Pinto you drove across Arizona in, then feel free to talk with great glee about Mexico. My point is simple, unless you are first generation, wet behind the ears, fresh off the boat broken English Alien then your allegiance should be 100% American. That means "WE" come first. The United States of America. Whenever I talk or write about this it always makes me think about John Wayne. Why you ask? Well take two and a half minutes and watch this...................

The Hyphen is the great divider. The sooner we drop the Hyphen, the sooner we will think of each other and ourselves as Americans. So next time someone asks you " hey what nationality are you?" You can answer, I'm American.....

I am appalled at this writer's contempt for differences. Hold on, I agree with everything you said in your first paragraph... But, wow, your second paragraph reeks of stereotyping and negative imagery concerning people of different backgrounds. I am sure if you ask an afghani what they remember of their culture, the first thing that will come to that person's mind is not opium. There is a big difference between cultural memories and traditions and current events in different countries. I won't even respond to the negative stereotyping of mexicans alluded in your paragraph. If you have ever visited Mexico (more than lying on a beach and drinking margaritas), you will experience a vibrant culture full of history and traditions which, like ours, and many others, value family and hard work. Please, by making comments like these you are actually adding fuel to the fire of the great divide. How about showing some respect for cultural differences? You can still be a part of this great nation, work, live and be proud of being american, and still be part of the global village.

Sorry, but I actually am a hyphen American. I hold two passports and have two birth certificate/registrations.
Cultural identity is important to Americans because we are in such a stew pot. Think about it as the meaty chunks that add flavor to the pot. Giving up our unique genetic identity is similar to cultural genocide and will help further erase the beautiful, wonderful, and diverse cultures we all come from.

Why does an american hold onto another legal nationality - keeping a bug out hole open??

What ties us together as Americans and makes us great is our unique ability to accept the rich colors and textures in our quilt. According to your list of rules, I am allowed to use the hyphen because I am "fresh" off a plane from the South Pacific - almost 40 years ago. I became a naturalized American citizen at 15 years old. My family is grateful for the many opportunities this country has given us. But the most important thing to me as a parent is to instill in my children and their future children, is respect for cultural heritage because this is what America is founded on...our history as a country continues to evolve and there is only great appreciation, not shame, in knowing and celebrating where all of our ancestors are from. The fusion of our music, our recipes and our fashion are what makes us interesting to each other.

What do you think of the Hyphen when it is used as shown in the video below?

Lee, I agree with you 100% I am an American first and foremost and while I am proud that my ancestors came over from Russia, I was born at L&M, USA. I would never call myself a Russian -American, even though I am half Russian. For me that would mean that I am first loyal to Russia and second to America. No way... glad the fam all made it over to America but I am worried about my family and keeping them all real. The sooner that we can all embrace being Americans, the sooner this country will start to unite. I know people that are so proud of their culture as they continue to collect their "hand outs" from the good old USA~ the only flag I salute is the American flag! thanks for keeping it real. I miss you on the radio every morning!

Nerissa- Bless your flavorful chunks in the melting pot!! No one is asking you to give up your unique genetic identity...will you agree that this nation is divided and perhaps just being an American is something to be very proud of. America embraces all cultures, somewhere we got this all wrong and the hyphen needs to go.

That is a stupid video. The hyphen JOINS two cultures. He was a better actor than a philosopher, or linguist.
wtfdrez April 28, 2012 at 05:29 am
Really Roy??.. Did you watch the entire video?? Would you be more impressed if Sidney Portier had narrated this video instead of a Caucasian-American. Oh, I went there!! The only Americans that deserve to be hyphened are African Americans and Native Americans, that is where it should STOP. If you were forced to live over here, than you take your hyphened name and be proud of it.

If you don't like hyphens, don't use them. Go ahead and look unappreciative of differences and disrespectful of people. It's cool. It's America. We love you anyway. It's ok to be different here.

wtfdrez - Lee is on the radio again - 95.9 I think it is, from 6-9. I have it auto-tuned, so I'm not certain about the exact number. It's out of Ledyard.

Thanks, Peg!

My Opinion; It is not the hyphen so much as the fact that many that use it think of themselves as another nationality first and an American second. To me this says they are here only for the benefits and do not really wish to be known as American
