One Pencil Returned, Second One Located

Both Big Yellow Pencils Are Expected Back by Thanksgiving

Gales Ferry School principal Mary Porter Price said one big yellow pencil has been returned, and a second missing pencil is expected to be returned by Thanksgiving.

The giant pencils, which decorated signs outside Gales Ferry School and Ledyard Middle School, disappeared about three weeks ago.  They have been the subject of several news reports, including a spot on Channel 8 News for Porter Price.

Town Councilor Linda Davis even offered a $100 reward for the return of the pencils.

Ledyard Police Lt. Michael Finkelstein said "an adult" surrendered one of the pencils to Ledyard Officer Liz Smith over the weekend. According to Porter Price, Board of Education Facilities Director Sam Kilpatrick indicated that the second pencil would be returned by Thanksgiving.

"It must have been my 15-second interview" on television last week that led to the pencil's safe return, Porter Price joked. "I wish they would be so quick to do a story about our CMT test scores."
