Police Blotter: High Speed Chase Ends in Arrests

U-Turn Results in Rte. 2 Crash; Several Route 12 DUIs

On March 14, at 2:39 a.m., Ledyard police Sgt. Kenneth Creutz observed a car driving erratically westbound on Route 214. When he attempted to pull over the car near the intersection of Elizabeth George Drive, it took off at a high rate of speed police said. Creutz gave chase at speeds of 70 mph. The car turned south at Route 117, where a second Ledyard officer joined the chase.

Once in Groton, additional police cruisers attempted to corral the car, but it proceeded onto I-95 and headed south at speeds approaching 100 mph in light traffic, Creutz said. The car finally was stopped in East Lyme with the aid of “stop sticks,” but the driver fled on foot. A Connecticut State Police K9 was used to locate and apprehend him.

Antonio McLendon, 28, of Waterbury, received multiple charges, including reckless driving, driving with a suspended or revoked license or registration, disobeying and eluding a police officer, improper passing and interfering with an officer/simple assault. His bond was set at $50,000.

Dana Campbell, 25, of Waterbury, a passenger in McLendon’s car, was charged with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana and interfering with an officer/ simple assault. Her bond was set at $1,500. Both McLendon and Campbell were arraigned on March 14.

On March 13, at 12:45 a.m., Michael Marshall, 54, or 15 Harry Hall Drive, Griswold, was driving north on Route 12 when he was stopped by police and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, failure to drive right and traveling unreasonably fast. He was released on a $500 non-surety bond and ordered to appear in New London Superior Court on March 29.

On March 13, at 11:38 a.m., police said Janus Sun, 41, of 42 Anthony St., Jewett City, was driving a Nissan sedan on Route 2 in the right lane, and was preparing to exit onto Foxwoods Blvd. when she noticed traffic was backed up and attempted to make a U-turn. A Buick SUV, driven by Edward Lague, 70, of Springfield, MA, was following Sun’s car, striking the Nissan on the left side. Extensive damage to both vehicles resulted. Sun, Edward Lague and his passenger, Laura Lague, all complained of pain and were taken to the hospital.

On March 12, at 2:17 a.m., Kenneth Hawkins Jr., 34, of 112 Connecticut Ave., New London, was driving southbound on Route 12 when he was observed crossing the double yellow line. He was stopped and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Hawkins was released on a $500 non-surety bond and ordered to appear in New London Superior Court that same day.

Also on March 12, William T. Goodson, 24, of 120 Michigan Drive, Groton, was seen driving erratically on Route 12 and was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and failure to drive right. He was released on a $500 non-surety bond and ordered to appear in New London Superior Court on March 25.
