Police Blotter: Sexual Assault

Arrests reported through Feb. 8.

The following arrests were recorded at the Connecticut State Police Troop E in Montville. An arrest does not constitute a conviction and all are innocent until proven guilty.

Feb. 2

At 9:13 a.m., police responded to a pickup vs. car accident on Route 12 at Long Cove Road.

Vehicles driven by James Edwards, 75, of 166 Ledgewood Road, Groton, and Lisa J. Stapleton, 33, of 10 Ramblewood Drive, Gales Ferry, collided. The front end of Edwards’ 2001 Toyota Tacoma was damaged, and the vehicle was towed. The left side of Stapleton’s 2011 Kia Sportage was damaged and was towed, and Stapleton report shoulder and neck injuries.

At 4 a.m., police arrested Darryl Spencer, 53, of 262 Connecticut Ave., New London, and charged him with fourth-degree sexual assault/unwanted touching, and breach of peace.

The report says that Spencer, a housekeeper at Two Trees Hotel in Ledyard, “knocked on the door of the victim’s room. After spending time with victim’s friend, he entered the bedroom where victim was asleep. (Alleged) offender pulled covers off victim and put his face on her gluteal. Victim was wearing underwear. Incident woke victim from sleep.”

Spencer was assessed a $5,000 non-surety bond and given a Feb. 17 court date.
