Two-Car Crash Shears Off Utility Pole on Shewville Road

On May 23, at 10:01 a.m., a two-car crash on Shewville Road sent two Ledyard men to Pequot Medical Center for treatment. Edward Romanski, 64, or 16 Boulder Road, struck a wooden utility pole, shearing it off. Michael Freeman, 66, of 15 Country Club Drive, was following Romanski, and swerved to avoid the crash, but was struck by the utility pole as it fell into the roadway.

The Ledyard, Gales Ferry, Mashantucket and Old Mystic Fire Departments responded, along with utility crews from CL&P and AT&T to replace the pole. No enforcement action was reported.

On May 22, at 5:23 p.m., a bus carrying 10 people westbound on Route 2 was struck by a vehicle driven by Joseph Carnevale, 85, of Cranston, RI. Carnevale was issued an infraction for making an improper turn. Marcia Thomas, 46, of Baltimore, a passenger on the bus, was transported to Backus Hospital, complaining of leg pain.

Also on May 22, at 9:42 p.m., Ledyard Police arrested Christine M. Foular, 39, after her car struck a utility pole on Avery Hill Road. Foular was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, failure to drive right and traveling unreasonably fast. Her bond was set at $500 and she was given a June 7 court date.

On May 20, at 1:48 a.m., Jess Brown, 29, or Westerly, RI, was traveling eastbound on Route 2 by Foxwoods when he attempted a right turn into Grand Pequot and lost control of his vehicle, striking a stone pillar in the center of the median. Brown was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and failure to drive in the proper lane. His bond was set at $1,500. No court date was reported.
